John Carroll has found its next leader, and it’s a familiar name to DeeThreeLax fans across the Midwest and New England. The Blue Streaks announced the hiring of Jason Tarnow as the program’s next head coach, bringing to University Heights one of the most experienced coaches in DeeThreeLax. Tarnow arrives with 23 seasons of head coaching experience, a career record of 179-134, and a track record of building and elevating programs at every stop along the way. For a John Carroll program looking to turn the page after a decade of success under Joe Rautenstrauch, the hire signals a commitment to returning the Blue Streaks to conference and national relevance.

Tarnow’s coaching journey has taken him through some of the most respected conferences in DeeThreeLax. Most recently, he spent nine seasons at Trinity College, where he helped restore the Bantams as a competitive force in the rugged NESCAC. Under Tarnow’s leadership, Trinity returned to the NESCAC Tournament in 2019 for the first time in eight years and earned another postseason berth in 2024. The breakthrough came in 2025 when the Bantams secured just the second NCAA Tournament at-large bid in program history. Trinity won its opening-round game before falling to nationally ranked York (Pa.) in the second round. During the 2026 season, the Bantams climbed as high as No. 16 in the rankings.

Before his tenure in Hartford, Tarnow made his mark much closer to University Heights. In 2012, he became the inaugural head coach at Baldwin Wallace, launching the Yellow Jackets program from the ground up. Over five seasons, BW quickly developed into one of the Ohio Athletic Conference’s top contenders, reaching four consecutive OAC Tournament semifinals and sharing the 2016 OAC regular-season championship. His 2017 squad finished 12-3 overall and 7-1 in conference play, earning Tarnow OAC Co-Coach of the Year honors. He departed Berea with a remarkable 51-21 record. Prior to Baldwin Wallace, Tarnow spent nine seasons at Wooster, where he guided the Fighting Scots to their first conference championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2004. He never posted a losing season during his tenure and compiled a 72-51 record while earning NCAC Coach of the Year honors.

For Tarnow, the move to John Carroll is more than just another coaching opportunity. Having previously coached at both Wooster and Baldwin Wallace, he has witnessed firsthand the tremendous growth of lacrosse in Northeast Ohio over the past two decades.

“From my time in Northeast Ohio, I’ve long admired JCU’s reputation for excellence in academics and athletics,” Tarnow said. “I’ve always kept my eye on JCU. The program and university is rich in success. The timing is excellent, as the sky is the limit for the program.”

That familiarity with the region, combined with his experience recruiting nationally through the NESCAC, gives John Carroll a head coach capable of attracting talent both locally and beyond. “The experience in the NESCAC, OAC, and NCAC will serve me well,” Tarnow said. “The experience I’ve gained can extend to JCU as we look to recruit elite student-athletes, just like the Blue Streaks have always done.”

While Tarnow’s resume speaks for itself, John Carroll Athletic Director Brian Polian emphasized the qualities that extend beyond the sidelines. “Jason comes to us with a proven track record of success as a head coach at three different institutions,” Polian said. “He is an excellent evaluator, recruiter, tactician, and leader of men.” Polian also pointed to Tarnow’s ability to positively impact student-athletes and his alignment with the university’s Jesuit mission as key factors in the hiring process.

Long before building programs as a head coach, Tarnow was one of DeeThreeLax elite goalkeepers. After beginning his collegiate career at Michigan State, he transferred to Salisbury, where he became a two-time USILA All-American, the 1998 Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year, and the Most Valuable Player of Salisbury’s 1999 NCAA DeeThreeLax National Championship team. He remains among Salisbury’s all-time leaders in saves and later launched his coaching career with assistant coaching stops at both Salisbury and Butler.

Tarnow inherits a John Carroll program that finished 3-8 overall and 3-5 in NCAC play in 2026. While the Blue Streaks struggled this spring, the foundation remains strong. Under former head coach Joe Rautenstrauch, John Carroll established itself as one of the premier programs in the OAC, winning seven OAC Tournament Championships and three OAC Regular Season Championships during a highly successful 10-year run. Now competing in the NCAC, the Blue Streaks are looking to re-establish themselves among the conference’s top contenders. Tarnow believes the groundwork has already been laid. “A strong foundation has been set for continued success in University Heights,” he said. “So many coaches prior to me have done an amazing job, and I want to keep pushing the program forward like they did.”

The Blue Streaks are entering a new chapter after an era of sustained success. If Tarnow’s track record is any indication, John Carroll has landed a coach capable of making sure the program’s best days are still ahead.
