Montclair State Lacrosse: A Storied Program’s Transition to Club Lacrosse

I almost can’t believe I am writing this story but yesterday 12/13/24 Montclair State came out with drastic new changes to its 2025 Athletics. Both Men’s and Women’s lacrosse programs will move from division 3 to club level in the fall of 2025. This move appears to make room for Women’s Flag Football as the athletic website stated “with a look to the future and in response to growing trends in college sports”. Truthfully, I did not know that Flag Football was a division 3 sport at this point, and find it crazy to declass both men and women’s lacrosse to make room for Flag Football. Nothing against flag football at all, but there is just so much history and success with Montclair State and the sport of Lacrosse. The school released the below statement about the transition and why this made sense for the schools best interest.

“This transition reflects evolving student interests and financial realities.” “By expanding club sports and adding new options, we create more inclusive opportunities while supporting wellness, academic success, and community engagement. It also allows the [Montclair State] to better allocate resources to enhance the overall student experience.”

A Proud Legacy in Division 3

Montclair State lacrosse has long been synonymous with success and resilience in the world of NCAA Division 3 athletics. The program has a history of competing at a high level, producing All-Americans and making NCAA Tournament appearances, particularly during its peak in the late 2000s and 2010s. Men’s Lacrosse made the NCAA Tournament appearances in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015,2016, and 2017. From dominating the Skyline Conference to holding their own in non-conference matchups against some of the top programs in Division 3, Montclair State consistently represented New Jersey lacrosse on a national stage. While Women’s Lacrosse also saw great success and made the NCAA tournament in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 and often found themselves competing late in the NJ Athletic Conference. Known for their gritty play and competitive spirit, the Red Hawks carved out a reputation as a team that could take on anyone.

Reflections from the Lacrosse Community

The lacrosse community has reacted with a mix of emotions. Alumni and former players have expressed sadness over the program’s transition but also a sense of pride in what the Red Hawks accomplished during their time in Division 3.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without Montclair lacrosse,” said one former player. “It’s heartbreaking to see the program change, but I know the legacy we built will live on.”

Current players and recruits are now faced with decisions about their future, whether that means continuing to play at the club level, transferring to another school, or focusing on academics.

Looking Ahead

As Montclair State lacrosse begins its new chapter, the program’s legacy in Division 3 will not be forgotten. The Red Hawks’ achievements, marked by grit and determination, will continue to inspire future generations of players.

For now, Montclair State is focused on finishing out 2025 season and last spring in division 3 on a high note and making the most for the seniors. Though the Red Hawks will be a club team soon the MSU Lacross programs will remain an integral part of the lacrosse world, proving once again that the game is about more than just divisions or titles.

I had the great pleasure to play DIII lacrosse at Montclair State for four years in the late eighties. In 1989 we were undefeated and in 2023 our goalie was inducted into the MSU Hall of Fame. My teammates are so proud of the program that became a favorite destination for great athletes, and we watched MSU make nine trips to the NCAA tournament! Players choose lacrosse because it’s fast paced, relatively safe, inclusive to men and women and has historic Native American roots. Lacrosse’s meteoric rise in popularity has led to a wildly successful professional league the Premier Lacrosse League and it was just announced that lacrosse will make its way back into the Olympics in 2028! What could go wrong? Well just a few weeks ago Montclair State announced that Lacrosse would be demoted to club level, and they would add flag football! This stunning announcement came without warning and inspired the NJ lacrosse community to start a petition that already has over 16,000 signatures. Whether this decision was motivated by money, inclusivity or the football program flexing its muscles I am not sure, but I do know the lacrosse community is a very close family and we are hurt right now but we will wipe our tears and fight for our sport.

    Yours truly,

Peter Franklin MSU class of ’89
